Event correlation is the process of grouping many related alerts and events, often thousands, into a small number of meaningful incidents or situations, by recognising that they share a cause, a time window, a topology or a pattern. It is the foundation of noise reduction in AIOps.
A single underlying failure can generate hundreds or thousands of alerts across dependent systems. Without correlation, operators face a wall of noise and miss the real signal, the defining cause of alert fatigue. Event correlation collapses that storm into the few situations that actually need attention.
Correlation uses several signals: temporal proximity (events close in time), topological relationships (events on connected systems), and learned patterns (groups of events that historically occur together). Modern engines combine these with machine learning to group events into a single situation with a probable cause.
Correlation produces a clean incident, but it still has to be resolved. The strongest platforms do not stop at a well-grouped situation; they use it as the input to investigation and governed remediation, so correlation leads to resolution rather than a tidier queue.
