What Are OTel Semantic Conventions?

Semantic conventions are the shared vocabulary that makes telemetry portable; without them, every tool names things differently.

OpenTelemetry semantic conventions are standardised names for attributes and metrics, such as http.request.method or db.system, so that telemetry from different libraries, languages and vendors describes the same thing the same way.

What they standardise

The conventions define agreed keys and values for common concepts: HTTP requests, database calls, messaging, cloud and Kubernetes resources, and more. When an HTTP span uses http.request.method and a database span uses db.system everywhere, dashboards, alerts and tools work across services and vendors without custom mapping.

Why they matter

Consistent naming is what turns telemetry from many sources into one coherent dataset. It is why an OpenTelemetry-based dashboard can work regardless of which language emitted the data, and why portability across backends is real rather than theoretical.
