Observability vs AIOps: What Is the Difference?

Observability and AIOps are often confused, and often sold together. This guide explains the real difference, and how they fit.

Observability is the ability to understand the internal state of your systems from the data they emit, logs, metrics and traces. AIOps applies AI to that data to detect, correlate and, in its autonomous form, resolve incidents. Put simply: observability shows you what is happening; AIOps acts on it.

What observability does

Observability is about understanding. It instruments systems to emit logs, metrics and traces, then lets you query and visualize that telemetry to answer questions about behaviour and performance, including questions you did not anticipate. It is the foundation, the data and the visibility, but it does not decide or act on its own.

What AIOps adds

AIOps sits on top of operational data and applies machine learning: reducing alert noise, detecting anomalies, correlating events into incidents, finding root cause and, in autonomous forms, executing and validating the fix. Where observability answers what and why, AIOps drives toward what to do about it.

Why you need both

The two are complementary, not competing. Observability without AIOps leaves humans to sift the data; AIOps without good observability has poor inputs. The strongest setups pair rich, open observability with an autonomous layer that resolves incidents, so seeing the problem and fixing it are one flow.
